New elementary OS loki is out. In this article we will show how to install Elementary os Loki in dual boot with Windows. Elementary OS is very neat distribution which aims to offer alternative to Windows and macOS and bring new users to the Free Software land. Elementary OS bases upon Ubuntu LTS releases. We are installing Loki 0.4 release which is based on Ubuntu 16.04 and it adds Elementary OS own GUI called Pantheon.

Requirements and making the USB flash drive

  1. Windows computer, with data backed up before proceeding.
  2. Rufus for making USB stick with Elementary OS, download it from here
  3. Elementary OS, download it from here. You can type 0 as cost in custom button, but if you can spare few dollars for Elementary OS dev team, you would be helping future development and that would be right thing to do.
  4. An empty USB flash drive. USB2.0 is ok, but if you have 3.0 or 3.1 it would save you time.

Lets start by plugging the USB stick in , firing up rufus and making the image.

Making the USB drive with loki

One picture is worth thousand words, you simply need after starting rufus to configure it like on picture. After the making of USB drive finishes, you reboot your computer and set it up to boot from USB drive in BIOS.

Then the elementary should boot like on pic bellow:

Elementary

On screen above, we need to pick second option, install elementary OS. It will take some time to load and then we are ready to install.

On screen above we choose the language for the installer. Default is English.

Instal proprietary drivers.

This above is actually important if you have some NVDIA graphics card, it will install proprietary drivers for you. If you are fine with nouveau, just uncheck it.

Install alongside windows

And picture above is where you chose to preserve your windows installation intact, so you have dual boot of elementary and Windows 10 in this case, or any other windows in your case.

assign space

Above is  is graphical view of how much space you want to assign to Elementary partition. I went with minimum here, but you can give it anything north of 30 gigabyte. It will give you some warning about need to backup data before proceeding, I hope you already did that before start.

Alternatively, if you have other Linux system already installed and want to triple boot, or want to fine grain partition settings (and you know what you are doing) , you can chose last option, (Something Else) like on pictures bellow:

I figure you already know but not bad to repeat that sign / means root and it needs to be entered as mount point of partition where you want to install Elementary. Next we move to time zone.

Next there is creation of user account, keyboard layout and passwords. When you finish with that, click continue

install done

After it is done, reboot computer:
